Is northern Pakistan safe for tourists?

Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the safest regions in Pakistan for travellers, including solo women. We travel with local drivers and guides, register groups where required, and stay in constant contact with our office in Gilgit.

When is the best time to visit northern Pakistan?

April to June for blossom and green valleys, July to August for Deosai, Shandur and the K2 trek window, and late September to October for the famous Hunza autumn colour. Winter tours to Hunza run December to February.

Do I need permits or a visa?

Most nationalities can obtain a Pakistan e-visa online. Open valleys need no permit; restricted zones such as Baltoro, Khunjerab and some border areas do — we arrange all of them, including the liaison officer for expeditions.

Driving the Karakoram Highway — a practical road-trip guide

Islamabad to Khunjerab: distances, driving times, fuel stops, altitude and where the road demands a 4×4.

The KKH runs roughly 1,300 km from Hasan Abdal to the Chinese border at Khunjerab, climbing from 500 m to 4,693 m. Most of it is sealed and in good condition; the sections that punish vehicles are the Indus gorge slides between Besham and Chilas, and any side road off the main line.

Sensible staging: Islamabad to Chilas or Naran on day one, Chilas to Hunza on day two, then use Karimabad as a base for Gojal and Khunjerab. Do not attempt the gorge sections after dark.

Fuel is reliable in Mansehra, Chilas, Gilgit, Aliabad and Sost. Carry cash — card acceptance thins out fast north of Gilgit.
