Basho is the day trip that locals book and tourists overlook. It is 90 minutes west of Skardu on a side road off the Skardu-Astore route, in a valley of dense pine forest, clear streams and high alpine meadows that genuinely look like the Swiss Alps. Above the valley sits the long shoulder of Nanga Parbat (the world's ninth-highest peak), though Nanga itself is hidden by closer ridges.

What you see and do in Basho
The road ends at a wooden bridge near Basho meadow, with a small dhaba and a few summer-only campsites. From there, easy walks lead into the pine forest, along the streams and up to the higher meadow at roughly 3,000m (about 90 minutes one-way). The streams are clean, cold and full of trout.
For overnight visitors, we run a managed campsite at the meadow with pre-pitched dome tents, bedding, dinner and breakfast. Star-gazing at night is excellent (no light pollution, narrow valley framing the sky).
When to go and what to bring
Best season: May to October. June-August are warmest and the meadow is at its greenest with summer wildflowers. April is muddy as the snow melts; October-November has the first frosts and is dramatic but cold overnight.
Bring layers (the valley is cool even in summer), walking shoes for the meadow trails, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. The dhaba serves tea and basic meals; we provide all meals for our day and overnight tours.
Why Basho is worth a day
Two reasons. First, it does not look like the rest of Skardu — Skardu is dry and rocky, Basho is dense pine and meadow. Second, it is quiet — most tourist itineraries skip it because it is in the opposite direction from the famous spots, which means you frequently have the meadow to yourself even in high season.
